LOOK AT YOUR LIFE, MORGAN
Well, after having a look, it seems alright for now. I've graduated from high school, will be leaving everything I've known for all my 'formative years', for a place out in the middle of nowhere five hours away in the desert, next to one of the biggest canyons in Texas.
Oh yes.
The gameplan, for now, is to go into West Texas A&M University (which is a satelite school for Texas A&M at College Station) pursuing a masters degree in business and accounting. I'll plan to transfer to the main campus from the satelite school after my freshman year. A&M didn't take me right off the bat, so I'm going in the back door. The cheaper back door, too. Anyhow, I'm skating off to do this on the grounds of getting a means of supporting myself while I try to make my art career in illustration my main thing.
A lot of people, a lot of artists, have told me that I don't need to do this. That, at the level I'm at, I could go to school for animation or illustration. This, I must say, is VERY flattering and does my confidence level untold good, but my parents would be chewing their nails off, waiting for the economy to crash forever and myself to get laid off from a business that is no longer needed.
This might sound irrational to some people, and I can practically hear the eyerolls now. But, I love my parents to death. They've given me far more than cloths on my back and a roof over my head and love. They've done their job well and done their best to fullfill a parent's duty: to make themselves unnessicary. To ensure that when I hop out into the world, I'll have a general idea of what to do with myself when faced with monitary, moral, social, and political situations. They've even done their best to teach me what to do with power, when it's given, which is a blessing I don't know that many have. That money is a tool like any other, and it's better to make it work for you than to work for it. That sometimes it's not what you know, but who you know. That hard work pays off and that standing up for what you believe in is the right thing to do, even when it's not the popular thing to do. That with privlidge comes responsibility and obligation. That one should think for themselves and question everything.
That is a BIG gift! And they ask for so little in return! My parents are both in their 50s, and are only getting older. I don't want them to worry about their daughter when their daughter is out of the nest. If I can give them some peace of mind that their daughter will be able to take care of herself in any situation, I think I owe it to them. Especially when they plan to fund most of my education and help me with cost of living till I am graduated and can support myself in a job that isn't flipping burgers or stocking shelves!
My art will be there, I know that. Even as I'm learning tax laws, I'll be fighting to build my reputation as an artist and sharpening my skills. I've got a game plan.
But enough about me! Have some art!

Moar Tellu Comic Madness
Colored Tellu outfits
Clothing is difficult for those unacustomed to them.
Tribe ladies in their various colors. I promice the tribe names will be more inventive than 'Brown', 'Red', 'Purple', 'Blue', and 'Orange'. Promice. These colors will apear a lot more in the comic, making for a very intriguing setting I hope I can pursuede the reader to take on faith. The best settings are like that in my opinion. For anyone who has ever read (or needs to read! http://rice-boy.com/) Rice Boy, you know that the setting was something that the reader took on faith. It was so crazy, that you didn't expect it to be explained, it explained itself. When you're dealing with a fantacy setting, it's tiresome and horrible to explain every little detail, so, the best kind of fantacy setting explains itself. That is what I hope to achieve.

HOLEE
Snaaaaap O8
Morgan Brewer, first in her division (15-18 age) at the Fort Worth Stock Show Art Competition? Really?
Yes really! WOO~gosh. 2,000 dollar scholarship, too! I am a happy camper today! You should be lucky I waited a day to post this, else it would have been a steady stream of caplocked 'wooo-hoos' and other nonsense. I have calmed down, but I am still so happy.
Mostly because I've been entering this contest for 8 years now. And I finally win big! I had a 'thankyou' speech planned for when they called my name, but they wouldn't let me near the microphone. ;P So I'll give it to y'all.
I want to thank my grandmother, first. Who put me through art lessons starting from when I was 8. When it boils down to it, she's the reason I've won this. I also want to thank my art teacher, who is such an amazing traditional artist, she still blows my stuff out of the water <3. I also want to thank my father, who named the piece.
But yes! I'll be getting pics up asap, as soon as I can get my grubby little hands on the camera! The article will be in the Superbowl Sunday edition of the Star-Telegram and all the other winners will be displayed on the website as well! Have a look at the grand prize winner, her piece was lovely.

Gearra Flur and Anticipation of the Weekend
I am hevily anticipating this weekend. I am. I can hardly stand it. In Novermber, I entered the Ft. Worth Stock Show and Rodeo Art Contest. They've upped the pot this year, too. Top holes Grand Prize through 6th place win money in the form of scholarhips (I as a senior to be graduating highschool can sure use!) with the grand price being 3,000 dollars and decending in value after that. I got the call back in December that I was one of the top seven finalists. Naturally, they only tell you your in the top seven to draw out the suspence, so you don't know if you're in the hole for money. The jerks.
Ft. Stock Show site: http://www.fwssr.com/
This weekend is when I finally find out if I'm in for money. Ooooogoodness I can't take it! D: A whole week is too long to wait! Somebody needs to finally comment on this blog and tell me to suck it up and be patient.

Eh, ehough of my lamenting. Have a sketch!
Kind of an old sketch of Murron and her (late) husband Nuet. Nuet wasn't a very great guy. As you can see, he wasn't married for his brains or his stunning wit.... >.>

This is Frith Rair and Murron. Bow hunting lessons, obviously
Let it be known that Frith is a much nicer fellow than Nuet.

Good Dog
A couple of sketches from a short story I've been working on, hevily influenced by Brave New World, called 'Good Dog'. These are a few of the main characters in the story. Probably say more about it later when I have a lot more written. This is a traditional sketch, one sketch slightly inked, then jazzed up on photoshop.

Mooooaaaaar D:
...submitted inbetween terrible paragraphs of a scholarship essay. x|
More Thorns sketching time. These are of my character Bey and another player's character, Grigori Hosturn, who is not only short, human, and old, but suffers from a growth on his thyroid that produces way too much adrenaline, which is hereditary in his family. But that's a pretty clinical definition, most who know him just realize that 'that fellow seriously isn't right in the head'. This is only half-true. Mostly you just don't want to make him angry. Grigori and Bey work on the same ship crew, and they're such an obvious foil. Mostly they're hillarious together.
Also, Grigori is scared of horses >3

Curry! I made some!
Pics or it didn't happen, you say? Well there you go. It did happen. I made curry!
For anyone who knows me, this is a 'big deal' that Morgan is cooking. She doesn't do this too much. ;P
Also, yeah, I'm a bit messy.
Wait, you say, isn't this supposed to be a 'sketch blog'? We don't want to see this gal's attempts at being domestic! D:|

New Year and New Post! (also movie review inside)
Happy New Year!! To everyone out there. :D I wish y'all a good new year and that you'll all have the fortitude to follow through with whatever new year's resolutions you've saddled yourselves with. I also wish the same fortitude for myself, naturally.
Movie Review Time! (I'll try to keep this as spoiler-free as possible)
I went to go see the second telling of True Grit.
And there's a reason I call it a 'second telling' and not just a 'remake'.
I was the little girl that woke up every Saturday morning to watch Bonanza. My movie diet at a young age was a strong mixture of western movies and Disney films. Mixing gunslingers with Cinderella might seem like an odd childhood concoction, but there you have it. Mostly my western movies featured John Wayne; who rightly only ever played that charismatic persona of 'John Wayne' that so many people in the mid 20th century couldn't help but feel drawn to. There's a reason those movies were famous. I can quote just about any of the films he featured in, from 'The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance' to 'Rio Bravo' to 'The Cowboys' to 'Tall in the Saddle'. I can quote True Grit. In my sleep. I loved that movie and I still do, even if the only thing Glen Campbell had going for him in that flick was that his hair looked nice.
Now, I must say that I have never read the book. I hear it is quite different in the telling. This new version of True Grit tried to stay by the book, I'm told (no pun intended). That's why it's more of a retelling.
I'd have to say that they had me into it in all but a few regards. I did my very best to walk into that theater and remind myself when the lights went down and the opening credits moved me into the dim dramatic glow of the first scene, that this was going to be different. That it would be prudent of me to keep an open mind. To give Jeff Bridges a fair go at playing a character that I know I enjoyed even if the drunken marshal had never been played by the Duke in the first place. As I watched the film, I noted that several things were a bit different in this film that were present in the telling before it. In truth I don't know if these things were present in the book. Mostly they were parts that John Wayne specifically had made very quotable in the public memory. Various lines of Marshal Rooster's were omitted and some of the situations that might lead into them (like fully introducing the Chinese man who's grocery store he lived in). I don't begrudge the writers anything for doing this, however, because you can't do John Wayne twice. Trying to go back and just make the first film 'more pretty' would be fruitless in an artistic and money-making view. The directors wanted to tell this story differently. So, to judge the second film by the first in that regard is unfair.
As a whole, the movie turned out to be a dark tale of post Civil War western justice with wonderful cinematography. The character of Rooster J. Cogburn was still enjoyable to me, along with Maddi Ross and the Texas Ranger. Some of the other actors left a few things to be desired (save for Lucky Ned Pepper, who was more memorable in this rendition than even Robert Duvall made him out to be in the first) and I think the dialogue can be seen as the real culprit. In various places along the way (with characters Moon and Quincy) and in about the latter fourth of the film (when we first really see villain Tom Cheney's face) the dialogue seemed to...turn. Change. Instead of listening to the growls of hardened criminals and lawless men, these men were growling...in clear and complete sentences with almost no contractions used and very little accent inflection.
What on earth was going on?
We'd moved from the wilderness of Choctaw Indian territory to a formal tearoom. Or so it seemed. Later I was informed by someone who as much better acquainted with the book than I that it was an artistic move on the directors' part. Because, in the book, the character Maddi tended to grammatically correct everything people around her said for her own ruler-backed benefit and that of the reader's. How was I supposed to know? It's not an intuitive conclusion unless someone tells you, or if you pick up on it after reading the book. And my guess is, most people that are going to pay to see this movie haven't read the book. It's not like a Harry Potter film, in which most of the viewers who pack into the theater are fans that fought tooth and nail to get their hands on each new book. True Grit is an older book that has had a long time to gather dust. It's not something like Gone With the Wind, which was sealed in a golden case to last forever in the modern human's schema. Art, especially art in the form of movies, is a form of communication. Most certainly in this case it is story-telling. If your viewer doesn't understand why your vicious looking criminals are suddenly speaking like well-educated men, then there's a problem. That's bad communication, and by dent, bad storytelling that put a nasty gash in the movie as a whole.
Three stars out of five for True Grit (second rendition)

Hello! I am Morgan Brewer and this is my sketch blog! Occasionally I'll probably upload a compleated work if I think it's extra snazzy (or if I freaking ripped my scalp off trying to get it just right!). I do sketch a whole dadgum lot, and I figured I should probably start now--now that I have my own computer. This thing will probably update quite a bit, as I am quite the avid sketcher.
Glad to finally have a sketchblog!
Welcome to the Corner of Obscurity and Nowhere!
will be posting sketches at a slightly later date, when I get some scanner software uploaded on this new comp. <3
